Alexandra Louise Parker did not have what one might call a normal childhood. Her father had been a hunter, the type that came and went as he pleased, and never intended to settle any roots. Her mother had passed away in a car accident when Alex was only eight and her father, uncertain of what to do with dragged her from place to place.

While he hunted she was left alone, or with strangers. Friends of his, other hunters, anyone he could find. While they weren’t bad people they weren’t exactly family and Alex never had the stability she needed. So she buried herself in school work, homeschooled and whatever she didn’t already know…she made sure she learned. She learned hunting too, in a very basic way. Her father never wanted her on the job with him but he did want her to be able to protect herself.

She was thirteen when he finally disappeared for good. For a while she had thought that maybe he’d just been delayed, but after weeks and then months of waiting…she had to accept there were only two possibilities, he had left her behind…or he had died. Neither were preferable, but Alex partly hoped that death was the reason she had now officially been labeled an orphan. The friends her father had left her with that time around were hardly that, and did not want a permanent arrangement so they turned her over to family services and at thirteen, Alex found herself in the system.

It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t ideal either. She was too old for anyone to want to adopt her but not yet old enough to be on her own. Basically she had become a glorified babysitter, pushed from family to family with younger kids of their own that needed minding. She found her in Chicago permanently which was strange. On the other hand it gave her the opportunity to attend school full time, in a real classroom and she excelled.

She had wanted to be a lawyer and though the costs of schooling for the program were daunting at eighteen she enrolled in pre-law. It was in class one day she met him. A guest speaker, a recent graduate of the very same program. It was like the moment their eyes had connected there’d been an instant spark and if she’d ever considered saying she was not interested the thought hadn’t lingered long. Things went fast, too fast and the young Alex was caught up in a whirlwind. In a few months, they were living together and a few more, they were engaged.

There was only one problem. A big one really. When things were good, they were so good, it was like they were two halves of one whole, moving together, everything in sync, but when it was bad? Well, the neighbours could attest to just how bad things could be. It had started with arguments, notably after a shift in behavior from him. Something was off, and Alex couldn’t figure out what. From there, the arguing grew more and more intense and he changed, became more erratic, more unpredictable.

One night their argument took a vicious turn. Though they had shoved each other in anger before, it had never gotten physical beyond that, until then. Something in him just snapped and to say Alex became a punching bag would probably be an understatement. She was lucky to be alive, if their neighbours hadn’t called the police on them, no one may have arrived in time to stop him from finishing her off. He was arrested and even without her testimony the physical evidence and witness statements were enough to put him behind bars. Alex’s brief happiness had been shattered and she’d been left with an empty apartment she couldn’t afford that was full of bad memories. Still she stayed.

Alex threw herself into her schooling instead. Studying by day, bartending by night. She tried her hardest to focus on getting her life on track and forget about the past. It didn’t work, Alex copes with alcohol, something she unfortunately has easy access to in her part-time position. She understandable keeps people at a distance now. It was funny, she had spent her childhood learning to protect herself from the Supernatural threat that she had never learned how to protect herself from the human one.
